At SLATE our volunteers are at the heart of our organisation and play a major role as part of our teams

Lives change, skills develop, friendships begin. Just a normal day at SLATE Feel Good Furniture.

We believe people with learning disabilities should have the same access to volunteering, work and learning opportunities as anyone else. We take a person-centred approach, helping people discover their passions, build confidence and flourish.

Work-based training

Every volunteer with us is a valued member of the team with a work-based training role that is individual to them and the goals they want to achieve. Typically, we offer entry level roles, including site assistant with customer service at our furniture shops and warehouse, craft and repair, stock preparation and organisation, drivers’ teammates, kitchen workers and hospitality. In reality, we tailor all roles to each individual, with a level of challenge that’s right for them personally.

Inhouse expertise

Our staff team are highly experienced in working with adults with learning disabilities and have worked with us for many years. Always up to date with legislation when it comes to compliance and welfare rights, our volunteer coordinator ensures all our volunteers, and their families where appropriate, are set up correctly to receive, or are in receive the support they’re entitled to.

Achieving individual aspirations

There’s no pressure to tick any boxes at SLATE. We focus on achieving volunteers’ aspirations in a judgement-free space. We provide a safe, supportive environment where we learn and enjoy each day together. If there are challenges along the way, we work through them, supporting each other and usually with plenty of laughs.

Discovering potential

We’ve seen lives change through volunteering at SLATE Feel Good Furniture and Cafe. And truly astounding potential uncovered. We never fail to be inspired by our volunteers who prove every day that the possibilities of what they can achieve in life really are endless, wonderful, but not surprising.

Training and Impact Centre facilities

Our Training and Impact Centre at our head office site provides a huge bonus in our work with volunteers. In a purpose-built environment we can offer more training opportunities, including PAT testing, First Aid, furniture repair skills and art projects
